The U.S. has entered the “Peak 65 Zone,” a period where more Americans are turning 65 than ever before. In 2024 alone, approximately 4.1 million will hit the big “6-5,” and this surge is projected to last three or more years.

What does this mean for seniors, their families, the economy, and the country? For those entering the 65+ range, who according to financial and healthcare experts should expect to live well past 90, it means planning for longevity vs. aging. And guaranteeing a productive post-65 life relies heavily on where we live.

“Don’t go gentle into that good night.”

– Dylan Thomas

Unlike the generation that preceded them, the Baby Boomers aren’t going “gentle into that good night,” wiling away their remaining years sipping iced tea on a rocking chair, subsisting on their Social Security or pensions, or simply “retiring” (which by definition means “to withdraw”). With decades ahead, this cohort (which is growing by 11,000+ per day in the U.S.) is looking for quality of life and a “health span” that matches their lifespan.

As with any generation, where you live impacts how you live. Planning for your next chapter must begin before you’re ready to move, regardless of the type of accommodations you want or require, such as independent living, assisted living, rehabilitation, or skilled care.

It’s more than just increasing life “expectancy;” it’s about creating higher expectations for what we want to get out of our lives – to make them as fun, productive, and fulfilling as possible.

“The key to longevity is to interact with other people.”

– Carl Reiner

If you’re approaching your “Peak 65” – or if you’ve already arrived – talk over your longevity plans with your family, those people who not only care most aboutyou but who will someday provide care for you. Also involve other trusted resources (healthcare professionals, financial advisors, etc.) to help you with the practical aspects of transitioning to your next chapter.

At The Chateau Girardeau, we want your golden years to be your “peak” years.

As always, we’re here to answer any questions you have.
